Give me a P! Give me an O! Give me a TTY!

This is Jack.

He's 2 and a half.

And couldn't care less about going potty in the potty.

I need help on this one.

Does anyone have any tips on potty training?

Each of our four kids were so different when it came to potty training...what worked for one miserably failed for another. Methods that worked: Nakey day (Austin...logic, pee goes in the potty), M&M's (Aaron...food was involved), schedules (Travis) and well...I can't remember how we trained Tamila. I know with Travis I tried all of these things and I felt like I was hitting my head against the wall half the time. What eventually worked was time and taking him to the bathroom every 30 minutes. And more time. I do know that pull-ups delayed the whole thing and I fell back to them quite often. Mostly due to the fact that they were easier than spending the whole day in the bathroom!

Joey was three and a half, so come back in a year if you still wonder!

Sometimes you just have to wait for it.....Aaron and Sarah were quite young, but Josh had NO interest until the age of 3. It was all finished in one night. I will tell you though, Aaron and Sarah had bed-wetting issues until around kindergarten whereas Josh hasn't ever had an accident.

Wait till he's 3 otherwise it is just a fight everyday.

While you wait enjoy the freedom of no pee down the sides of the toilet and no runs into public bathrooms.

Here is my advice...I got nothing.
Ethan was a week away from 4 and we had tried EVERYTHING and I agree with Laurel on the pull ups...they were stoopid and did no good for us. Finally I just put hi in underwear and said "scr*w it" and after about 2 weeks he went in the potty....but he was so close to being 4 that it was also embarrassing.
Ashley trained herself at 2...seriously, girls are easier in this house.

I find a parallel between potty training boys and theology. We spend so much time on the first work of grace (saved/going in the potty) and instead of rejoicing for and with the new convert, we go right on to the second work of grace (sanctified/putting the lid down). And for many Christians and males, they feel like the first event is enough!

He and Kaleb are the same age (I think within a week), and Kaleb's interest comes and goes. As long as he's trained by September so he can go to preschool, I'll be happy. They'll get it eventually! (I hope)

I'm a friend of Jen T.'s and your title caught my eye. I'm going through it with my 2nd girl right now...First was easy because I could put my whole mind, body, and soul in it. Now, with trying to train Little E and with a newborn in arms, I'm not always quick enough. At home we go sans pull ups, but naps and nighttime require them. Since I've got girls I'll refrain from advice. I hear boys are a diff. breed...if it helps, my bro didn't feel the need until he was almost 4...he's pretty normal now.:) Wait, that sounds DIScouraging, not ENcouraging. Hmmm...I'll get back to you.:)

My son didn't care about using the potty either. On day he came home from preschool and said he didn't want diapers anymore because none of his friends had them. Wham-o potty trained! His teenage years scare me!

Just as you begin to get him trained and head down the freeway and pass the last gas station, he will announce he has to go. Then you make a mad dash to the next exit and hope for a gas station on the corner. Then you will wish he was still in diapers!

Oh, GIRL, this is such a headache. I mean, obviously a necessary one, but still. As others have said, I think each kid is different, but I've heard that you'll have a lot more success when the kiddo seems interested. (Unless he's 5 and still not interested.)

For us, we waited until Carson showed a desire (he was 2 months short of 3 years), then we went 100%, full force, no looking back, M&M's, charts, no pull-ups except during sleep time, etc. It was what worked for us. We basically planned to stay home for 4 days straight, pumped up the kick-off for days in advance, forced the liquids down and set the timer. I just told him "You don't wear diapers anymore from now on." Check my blog for last June for my play-by-play.

Good luck! Remember, any of our ideas might fail miserably with your kiddo. But whatever you choose, don't be too hard on yourself.

Wait. Colin was 3 before he was trained. 3 1/2 before he was fully trained. It's okay.

I'm with the . . . "wait till later" crowd. However - - target practice with cheerios tossed into the bowl greatly increased interest with my little guy around here. I'm just sayin'. . . (Fruit loops work too - then you can aim for different colors - they even change color - is that too graphic for this family friendly blog?)

One more thing about Aaron....he potty trained easily in a day EXCEPT for poo...I know that sounds funny, but he literally woke up one Sunday morning just after he turned 2, put on big boy pants and went to church. I warned his Sunday School teacher, but there was no looking back. But for some reason he WOULD NOT poo on the toilet. He was almost getting constipated because he would hold it, he obviously had control over it. I had to be sneaky and for several days I actually lurked around him, waiting until that moment when they get quiet and you know it's past the "point of no return". I quickly pulled down his pants and stuck him on the toilet and he had no choice. Once he did it the first time it was absolutely no big deal and we never had to deal with it again. I have no idea what he was afraid of, and yes I have oddball but love-able kids.....good luck still.

Isaac was one month from turning 3, he just decided that he was ready and then it took maybe 2 weeks total. He has never had a bedwetting accident, he had maybe a grand total of 2 or 3 wet undies problems at the beginning. Potty training was super easy because I just didn't fight him - when he was ready - he did it. Now, poopy training...kill me now...has been a TOTALLY different story. We have bribed with M&M's with each poop event, we've given all sorts of foods/drinks that should make him HAVE to go...tough luck Mommy...Isaac controls his pooping events and he is 4 1/2 and it is still a daily battle to go when he needs to instead of waiting until his body decides for him! Seriously. Poopy training is KILLING ME!

Does he show any sign that he knows he's gone? Or going? That's usually the first sign that he's ready to potty train. If he is, regular schedule of trying every 30 minutes while loading him up with fluids. Sing and distract him while he sits there for 5 minutes at a time. Ask him if he needs more or if hes done at the end of 5. Have treats or toys that are special and he only gets when he goes. Lots of praise and making it a production so he sees how important it is. Use real underwear no pullups. He prob won't like the feeling of wet clothes and it will encourage him to go. I know I don't have kids yet but I work with 2 year old and have helped potty train them. Hope things work out.
